HalloWEEN is for Weenies

My cousin, sister-in-law and friend ALL wrote about the "joys" of trying to get your kids to decide on a costume (preferably the one you already bought/borrowed) and the frustration associated with that whole parenting mess. So far all the children I KNOW OF that give Halloween grief are BOYS. Interesting. Maybe because Girls naturally love to play Dress-UP??

I don't hate Halloween. I used to be really into it when I had all toddlers that would do what I said. Now, I get annoyed easily with Halloween and prefer to take a minimalist approach: I only get minimally involved with the holiday. I did spend 45 minutes curling Rachel's hair:

Rachel was my only child that did a decent job of dressing up. She has been planning to wear the princess garb for awhile.

All the other kids made plans, then changed them at the last minute. Like 10 minutes before the Halloween Parade at School.

Ben refused to wear his costume that I spend $20 on. Good thing I saved the reciept. What was I thinking? I'll tell you:

Ben is a kid that has always worn what the other kids have handed down to him. I had a coupon and got a cool Star Wars WITH GUN costume, valued at $40 . . . for half off. And then he wouldn't wear it!! BROTHER!

Katrina's costume included tights, pig-tails w/ribbons, rosy cheeks/freckles, a HUGE pacifier and a baby bonnet that matched her "bib." She opted to just wear the bib all day. Not having a good costume didn't affect her pumpkin bowling game, though. Thank Goodness.

The Halloween Diva in our family is my niece, Rachel's Bosom BFF. She is about as UN-GIRLY as they come and always CREATES unusual costumes for herself.

This year she was the Mad Scientist Children's Book Character: Franny K. Stein

Her mother dressed the new baby, Loveable, in an old Idiart favorite: THE BUNNY COSTUME!

My other niece, Elise, wore another Idiart Favorite: Tinkerbell. Her brother was a muscley- Spidey!

My sis-in-law Christine really wanted the whole family to match. Jared didn't want to be Peter Pan and Marcus wasn't planning to do the Hook think, so Christine did Hook. I remember those days. One year Rachel was Tink, Josh was Hook and Emma was Tiger Lily. Very cute.

This year, I never even saw Emma's costume. She went home with friends after school and didn't come home until 10pm. Josh wouldn't wear a costume to school. He had been through a few ideas, never settling on one. Finally, for the church trunk-or-treat he came up with a Hippy Costume. He also went out with friends after the church party. It's weird to have kids that are half grown !

Damian went on a Man Date with my brother-in-law, Aaron to the local HS football game. My 3 little kids slept over at their cousins. I went home and watched a movie ALONE and didn't have ONE Trick-or-Treater. I love life in the country! And I just could care less about Halloween.

I know these are random, but they were my favorite costumes, worn by teachers at my kids school!

Oh, Sarah. Is this what I have to look forward to in the next few years? You know, there were a bunch of parents yelling at their kids all night while we were trick-or-treating. That kind of sucks all of the fun out of it, doesn't it? We always buy lots of candy, but don't have any trick-or-treaters. We end up eating it ourselves...

I miss the days as well when the kids are too little fight what the WONDERFUL ideas we come up with to dress them in....
I have had...

A zoo (all the kids were different animals.)
One year I did Bobby as a elephant, and very newborn Cody was peanut! So cute!
I had all four ninja turtles one year, and the next year all four boy power rangers...I also spent days and weeks sewing and making costumes. I have been told by many a relative that I am sick.....

This year was totally different. Everyone kept changing their minds and no one wanted to go with a theme. Party poopers!

We left a bowl on our porch and went with our girls. Our neighbors did the same thing, and when we got home the bowls were empty. I am guessing there are one or two kids who have more Dum Dum suckers than they will ever need! Who could possibly want 250 suckers? Not me, so I am kind of happy they are gone. Your family all looked very cute, even with last min changes.

We went to our ward's trunk or treat for half an hour -- it was too windy to stay long -- then came home and walked two blocks in the neighborhood. I think this will be the first year we won't still be eating Halloween candy at Christmas!

At least all of the kids still had fun, that is what it is really about!! BTW, remind me when my kids start at Mae Richardson to NOT request the lady in the Pirate Goth outfit, did she forget she was at an Elementary School? So inappropriate! Maybe she is really nice, and just had an adult party to go to right after the kid parade, and wouldn't have time to change!!

I saw Benny at the trunk-or-treat. He's got the racket figured out- skip the costume and people will still give you candy. I would have loved to see Emma-- she told us about her gothic/hick/nerd costume. Why make costumes when your kids are so creative on their own?

Nick has gotten to the point where he pilfers my stash of costumes (I'm very much a hardcore Halloween geek, and I tend to go all out :) ). Check my post for "Happy All Saints Day" to see what my kids decided to wear (LOL!). I'm sure Emma and Nick would have got along famously :).

Your kids are all cute and I'm glad you got to celebrate the holiday in the manner you appreciated!

So Halloween evolves then as your kids age? That would explain why Spencer's mom, and pretty much all her kids, loath the holiday. I just think it is fun and don't quite understand the chip they have on their shoulder about candy and costumes. It seems like a fantastic combination.

I'm glad Rachel is little enough to let me dress her up however I want! I love dressing up, but I don't like trick-or-treating. So trunk or treat is a great idea. Your Rachel looked beautiful as a princess!
